The 2020 Club Championships concluded on Sunday 23rd February. This is the first time since 1995 that Somers Tennis Club has hosted a Club Championships, and it was a huge success!
Finals results:
Women’s Doubles: Bindi Mealey/Clea White def. Louise Adams/Jacqui Moir 6-3 6-4, 12th Feb @ 7pm.
It was a tight contest for most of the match and this one could have gone either way. Bindi and Clea ultimately prevailed in straight sets.
Mixed Doubles: Ray Willis/Glenice Carr def. Brad Billing/Zoe Proctor 6-2 6-3, 19th Feb @ 6pm.
Zoe and Brad started well in both sets but it was always going to be tough going. The combo of Ray Willis and Glenice Carr has been going strong for over two decades, and ultimately proved to be the difference despite the age gap. This is Ray Willis’ first Mixed Doubles Championship win since 1979, a quiet 41 years between drinks!
Men’s Doubles: Oscar Willis/Harry Austin def. Chris Bullard/Taylor Brennan 4-6 6-1 7-5, 23rd Feb @ 1pm.
An epic for the ages, these two pairings always put on a tight see-sawing contest, and this was no exception. Chris and Taylor got the fast start, before Oscar and Harry blitzed the second set. After going up 5-2 in the third, Chris and Taylor pegged it back to 5-5 before Oscar and Harry ultimately broke serve and then held to take out the decider 7-5 in a 2 hour 20 minute thriller.
Men’s Singles: Connor Hipwell def. Oscar Willis 6-2 6-2, 23rd Feb @ 3:30pm.
This match up was a tale of two opposites, overwhelming power versus staunch defence. From the beginning Connor ran Oscar ragged, pushing him side to side almost every point. Oscar was able to draw out the match to an hour and 40 minutes, but Connor's exceptional serve and ground strokes were too much to handle, despite the extremely long rallies.
Thank you to all involved, we hope to see you all plus more next year!
